The unfortunate truth is that the majority of us have been touched by cancer. At the Cancer Foundation we hear stories each and every day on how cancer is impacting local residents, their families and friends and co-workers. I am proud to tell you that the Cancer Foundation is the only local charitable organization dedicated exclusively to fundraising for cancer care in our community.
Here in our region… 1 in 3 people in our community will receive a cancer diagnosis. The reality is, that number is expected to increase to 1 in 2 this year. Here in Eastern Ontario – our survivorship ratio is currently 61%.
In 2008, there were more than 5,900 new cancer cases in Eastern Ontario.
Within one generation, the odds can be different. We can control cancer, cut the incidence of cancer and the rate of cancer deaths by as much as half because we know how to prevent, find and treat cancer.
In Ontario, less than 30% of survivors have access to cancer services and wait times are long for both diagnosis and treatment.
Together, we are working to ensure local residents have the best possible cancer care close to home.
Please join me in supporting this Sunday’s Cancer Foundation Telethon.
